As parenets, we always want to do what is best for our kids. Part of doing our best is making sure that they eat wholesome, nutritious foods that fuel their bodies and brains.

But, how can you make sure your babysitter will follow your food routines? Here are some ways to prepare your sitter for making sure your family is eating well while following all of your rules and preferences.

1. MAKE THINGS EASY

With the rise in childhood allergies, childhood obesity, food scares and lifestyle changes, food control is very important. But there is a limit to how much you can control what the kids put into their mouths, especially when they are with their sitter or nanny. Make sure your sitter is prepared from the get-go in your house to give the kids the right food.

You have several tactics that you can try: give the sitter ingresients that the kids should avoid. make an allergy sheet, have the sitter fill out a food log, make a separate cabinet for the kids'foods... there are unlimited options to make sure your sitter or nanny knows what is going on.

2. BE DIRECT

Aoproach your sitter or nanny directly if she is giving the kids unhealthy foods. Talk openly about why is going wrong and why, and make sure that it is a two-way conversation. Your sitter may have some valid explanations for why the kids had Doritos instead of strawberries for a snack yesterday, or she may not be aware that the kids are sneaking items they aren't suppose to have.

Ideally, your sitter would know every single move your kids are making, but honestly, it's a bit unrealistic. After all, it could be happening on your watch, too. Make sure that you aren't judgemental. 3. CONSULT THE KIDS

Check to make sure that you are getting the right healthy-eating messages across to your kids first, before even making your way to the nanny. Be sure to praise your kids when they make the right choices -- positive reinforcement goes a long way! And, if your kids are like the other 99% of the child population that opts for sugary snacks over those organic veggies, explain why they would be better off to eat something healthy and offer them a choice. Many times, they will go for the healthier option, especially if they feel it was their decision and not yours.

The same is true with their sitter. Instruct the kids' caretaker on what you'd like her to do if she sees the kids reaching for cookies instead of fruit. The key is to not be too dismayed about the occasional junk food the kids may eat. Likewise, don't be too hard on your sitter if there is an occasional slip-up. It happens!

If there is a constant conflict with food in your home, it is time to reevaluate your stance on eating. If the nanny is doing a good job of feeding the kids your chosen meals snacks, and the kids are eating those things a majority of the days they are together, it's okay to cut everyone some slack.

4. SUPPORT THE SITTER

Every kid at some point or another refuses to eat something. In fact, most of us (whether or not we care to admit it) once lobbed yams or potatoes across the kitchen when our parents tried to feed them to us. You need to give your sitter an "out" if this happens.

If Johnny refuses to eat pureed spinach, and the sitter or nanny in desperation feeds them pizza, you will have to take the caregiver's side. After all, it is a lot scarier to have a starving child than a child eating pizza. You can take it up with little Johnny later, but your caretaker will need your support on the job.

5. EMPOWER AND EDUCATE

Are your kids objecting to the nanny or sitter cooking? Let your kids cook with you and explain why the family is making healthier choices. Help them to understand all the wonderful things found in nutritious food helps their bodies grow, their bones and teeth stay strong, makes their brain more alert and smart, and gives them the energy to do the things they love such as dance and play sports.

This will help them understand why you want them to eat well instead of filling their bodies full of "bad" foods that do nothing but weigh them down. If will also set them up to make their own smart choices whem you aren't around.

6. RELAY THE KIDS' PREFERENCES

Recognizing your kids' natural preferences and sharing those preferences with your children's caregiver will go a long way towards avoiding disagreements over food. If your child doesn't like okra now, he might never like it. But if your sitter has no idea and she feels she's are expected to make sure that your child eats it, a conflict will ensure. Kids can be extremely picky eaters, especially when it comes to nutritious food. But, one vital piece of information can help you figure out how to get the children to eat healthy: kids eat with their eyes.

If they like the way something looks, children are more likely to eat it, or at least try it. These fun, healthy and Sittercity-tested recipes are great to try when you are on the job.

LADYBUG

- One fresh peach or a can of peach halves
- Raisins
- Maraschino cherries
- Baby carrots
- (Makes two Lady Bugs)

Place a fresh or canned peach-half, pitted side down, on a plate. Use raisins for the eyes and dots on the back of the Lady Bug, cherry stems for the antennae and half a maraschino cherry slice for the mouth. Take the baby carrots and cut them in half, then use them for legs.

PUPPY DOG

- One fresh pear or a can of pear halves
- One banana
- Raisins
- Maraschino cherries
- Apple wedges
- (Makes two puppy dogs)

Place a fresh or canned pear-half on a plate. Cut a banana lengthwise in half and then crosswise in half. Place one of the banana halves at each side of the large end of the pesr half for the ears. Use a raisin for the eye. Place a cherry half at the narrow end of the pear half for the nose and use the apple wedges for the collar.

BUNNY RABBIT

- Lettuce leaf
- One fresh pear or a can of pear halves
- One banana
- Raisins
- Strawberries
- Pretzel sitcks
- (Makes two bunny rabbits)

Place a fresh or canned pear half on a lettuce-lined plate. Use raisins for the eyes, then cut a strawberry in half lengthwise for the nose. Use pretzel sticks for his whiskers and then slice a banana in half lengthwise for the ears.

STAR SALAD

- Lettuce leaf
- Five melon wedges (cantaloupe, honeydew or watermelon)
- 1/2 cup creamed cottage cheese
- Strawberry slices
- (Makes one star salad)

Place the lettuce leaf on a plate. Arrange melon wedges on the lettuce leaf in a circle with the points outward to make star. Spoon 1/2 cup cottage cheese into center of the melon star, then garnish with the strawberry slices.

MAGIC WANDS

- Two red apples, cored and cut into chunks (about 12 chunks per apple)
- One cup red grapes
- Avocado (pitted, peeled and cut into eight pieces)
- 36 long, thin pretzel sticks
- (Makes 36 wands)

Use a skewer to poke holes in the center of each piece of apple, grape, cheese and avocado. Thread one piece of either the apple, avocado or one grape onto the end of the pretzel stick through the holes.

COLORFUL, EDIBLE PLAY DOUGH

- 1/2 cup salt
- 2-1/2 cups flour
- 2 packages Kool-Aid
- 3 tablespoons oil
- 2 cups boiling water
- Cookies cutters of different shapes and sizes
- (Makes about two cups)

Mix dry ingredients, then add the oil and water. Knead until doughy. Make a few extra batches to store in the refrigerator so it is easily on hand. Put out cookie cutters to make fun shapes and let kids cut out the shapes they would like to eat once they are done playing. Make sure you conver the play area with waxed paper before putting the play dough out!

PEANUT BUTTER PINWHEELS

- Peanut butter (chunky or creamy, whatever the kids prefer)
- Honey
- Wheat tortillas
- Granola
- (Makes about six pinwheels per tortilla)

Spread creamy or chunky peanut butter and a little bit of honey on a wheat tortilla. Sprinkle with granola, roll up the tortilla and slice it into bite-size pinwheels.

BUGS IN THE SAND

- Plastic bag
- Graham creckers
- Raisins, blueberries, cranberries, nuts or carob chips

Place a graham cracker on a plastic bag, seal it shut and crush the crackers into fine sand using a large spoon. Add a few raisins, blueberries, cranberries, nuts or carob chips to the bag and have the kids dig for "bugs" in the sand. Afterward, give them a spoon so they can eat the sand!

FISHING POND

- 1/2 cup low-fat cream cheese or cheese spread
- Fish-shaped crackers
- 4 celery ribs, stems removed
- Blue food coloring
- (Serves two)

Scoop the cream cheese into a bowl and add a little blue food coloring to make it look like a "pond". Place the goldfish in a separate bowl, or surround the "pond" with them. Let the kids dip the celery sticks into the cheese, then into the bowl of crackers to "catck" a fish.

EDIBLE PAINTINGS

- 1/4 cup nonfat milk
- 2 to 3 drops each red, blue, green and yellow food coloring
- 2 slices of whole wheat bread
- 2 clean paintbrushes
- 4 small plastic or paper cups
- (Serves two)

Pour on tablespoon milk into four small cups then use drops of food coloring to make four different colors of "paint." Let the kids paint their piece of bread however they choose and then toast it for a fun and tasty treat!

How Sitters And Parents Can Be Swindled

The emails seemed legit. The families seemed genuinely desperate. The nannies seemed responsible. But in the end, someone was still out a ton of money. That almost sounds like some twisted new-age crime novel (okay, a bad one), but sadly, it can be real life for users of any online service.

There are different variation of scams circulating online babysitting communities, so here are a few ways that scammers can try to swindle online users.

How Nannies May Get Scammed

1. OVERSEAS SWINDLE

The scammer poses as an overseas family looking for a nanny to relocate from the US. After building trust through several back-and-forth emails, the family offers the nanny the job and offers to pay 60% of the nanny's travel expenses to relocate. The nanny must wire her 40% share to the overseas family, who promises to then purchase the nanny's ticket. Instead, the scammer pockets the money and runs off quicker than your kids before bath time.

2. "ACCIDENTAL" OVERPAY

To convince the nanny that they are truly interested in her services, a family will offer the nanny an upfront sum on good faith. The nanny cashes this (fake!) check and - whaddaya know - there is suddenly a problem. The family tells the nanny that they accidentally overpaid, so she must send some of the money back. The only problem is that, unbeknownst to the nanny, there has not been any real money deposited into her account. Before the bank recognizes that the check is a fraud, the nanny wires back a lump sum, never to hear from the family again.

3. BUSINESS TRIP BLUFF

An overseas scammer will hire a US-based nanny to watch his child while he is in town on business. He will then send(fake) checks to the nanny to cover the child's food, expenses and stay. As soon as the nanny cashes the checks, the scammer immediately cancels the trip because his child suddenly falls ill. He then requests that the nanny send the money back to cover the child's medical expenses, without which the child will be denied necessary treatment. Yes, he will shamelessly exploit your concern.

4. THIRD PARTY PAYOFF

A family that has agreed to hire a nanny tells the nanny that a third party owes them money and will thus be paying her a sum upfront as a way to pay off his debt to the family. Apparently, this scammer confuses "complicated" with "creative." Either way, the third party wires what he owes the family (say, $1500) to the nanny, but this sum is actually more than the nanny's fee (say $1000). The nanny must send the remaining amount ($500) to the family, since it is "rightfully" theirs, owed from the third party. Of course, the orginal check is fake and, once again, nanny just paid out of pocket.

5. VISA VICTIMIZATION

A family will contact a nanny who they know needs a visa to work in their country. They will convince the nanny that they have a lawyer who can obtain this visa, but he charges a hefty fee (you'd expect nothing less at this point, right?). The nanny will need to pay either part of all of the lawyer's costs to get the visa, which she does. The problem? You guessed it. There is no lawyer.

How Parents May Get Scammed

1. SPONSORED STRING-ALONG

A family will find who they think is a fabulous nanny, but the nanny is from out of town or overseas. Once she has the family hooked, the nanny reveals that she needs part of her trip sponsored. Ever so responsible, the nanny suggests deducting those funds from her paycheck once she arrives, to pay the family back for their generosity. The family thus wires money to the nanny, who in some cases goes as far as booking a flight and providing the family with flight information. But she never gets on a flight, and the family never hears from her again

When you are totally at the end of your rope or have essentially maxed out your creativity capacity for the week, these games can come in and save the day as fun and easy alternatives to watching TV or playing video games.

From the new and engaging to the completely classic, we have got both indoor and outdoor games to keep the kids entertained during any babysitting job.

1. MARCO POLO

Best played outside, this game allows kids to run around and stretch their legs while they also get some air. The blindfolded person who is "It" yells, "Marco," while everyone else hides and teases that person by yelling, "Polo," to get his attention in their directions. The kids will giggle and laugh watching the It person stumble around. Be prepared to step in to steer the blindfolded child in a different direction if you see him heading for a tree stump or something harmful.

2. BANANAMEN

A creation straight out of Ann M. Martin's Baby Sitters' Club series (how much did you LOVE those books?) - make bananamen to keep your charges calm. Use nuts and raisins to dress up a banana, then have a competition to see who can come up with the most creative story about their bananaman.

3. DUCK, DUCK, GOOSE

It never gets old. Sit everyone in a circle, then have one person go around tapping everyone on the head and saying "duck" until "goose" sends them running after the person chosen. This game has benefits -- if you are tired, orchestrate a small breather for yourself as the "goose." And consider variations like "macaroni" and "spaghetti" for the duck and the goose to keep the kids on their toes.

4. EDIBLE PLAYDOUGH

If you combine 1 cup of peanut butter, 1/4 cup of honey, and 1/2 cup of powdered milk, you will get edible playdough! Make creations (snakes are an obvious choice), mush them all around and eat them. It is probably best not to play this with any sick kids, since the germs can spread like wildfire in this little activity.

5. STACKING DOMINOES

If you can't find the traditional dominoes, try this game with cheese, cookies and anything else you have on hand. You can either stack the objects to see how you are your can get them, or you can get them, or you can stand the dominoes on their sides, and line them up in twists and turns all around the room. If you want to get really creative, attached strings, drops and balls to the game and see if you can make a chain reaction happen.

6. COLORING, KICKED UP A NOTCH

Most kids love to color. However, some can only color inside the lines for so long. To keep kids quite for hours, throw out the traditional coloring books and instead tape pieces of paper together to make murals on a grand scale. Make a map of Africa. Or Hawaii. Don't just draw houses and clouds -- those are for amateurs.

7. ALTERNATE ENDINGS

Read the kids a book, then sit around and make up alternate endings for the story. Planets, sorcery and mystery should always play large roles in this game.

8. LOST IN A MUSEUM

Take toys that look like museum pieces and set them up around the room, them pretend that you are locked in a museum for the night and have to make do with them until the next morning. This gets fun whem there are table and beds that you can hide in and under.

9. HIDE AND SEEK

A classic, but there are tons of different variations. First, you can follow the traditional rules where one person closes their eyes, the rest hide and the seeker must run around until he finds each of the hidden kids. Another way to do this is to take an object or toy and hide it under something that begins with the letter "t." Tell the children they can look all over the house, but only in/around/under things that begin with that letter -- a great educational experience for younger ones learning the alphabet. A third variation of hide and seek is often called "Sardines." In this game, only one person hides while the rest count and try to find him. Whenever someone finds the hider, she hides with him, until the last person has found the group huddled together.

Autism is the fastest-growing developmental disability in the US, affecting 1 in every 150 children. It is a lifelong disorder that impairs a person's ability to communicate and relate to others, and symptoms can range from moderate to severe.

These symptoms often include rigid routines and repetitive behaviors, such as obsessively arranging objects or following very specific routines - but that is not all. Some children with autism speak while others are nonverbal. Some children don't make eye contact while others do. Some children are affectionate while others aren't. Essentially, autism affects different children differently.

As a caregiver, you should be familiar enough with autism that you would be comfortable interacting with an autistic child, no matter where he or she falls on the spectrum. These tips should help you feel more comfortable doing just that.

INITIAL MEETING

Children with autism need structure, routines and predictability. The fact that you are coming into their lives as a new caregiver means that the usual routines the child relies on are being interrupted. Don't be surprised if the child becomes upset or ignores you until he is comfortable with the new routine you are creating.

Tips

- Be patient and realize that it may take a while for the child to get used to you.

- Unless the parents say otherwise, don't make direct eye contact.

- Take it slow at first. Your approach has to be tailored to the child.

- Let the child approach you or leave you be. Take his lead.

- Be consistent in your greeting: greet the child the same way every time you see him so he knows what to expect from you.

INTERACTION

Some children with autism are nonverbal while others speak. Some children with autism don't make direct eye contact (they see it as a threat) while others are fine with it. Some children with autism don't like hugging or touch while others do. As a caregiver, it is important for you to talk to the parents to find out what types of interaction their child prefers.

Tips

- Interact even if the child doesn't speak. If he hands you a toy, take it and comment on it. Don't worry if you don't get a response.

- Be sensitive to sensory issues like hugging.

- Be aware that certain toys can cause over-stimulation.

- Don't invade the child's space or take something away from him. If he gets on the floor to play with his car, for example, you can get on the floor as well and play with a car of your own.

TASKS

If you are asking a child with autism to do something, be sure to give directions one step at a time. Instead of telling a child to go to the closet and get a coat, for example, first tell the child to go to the closet (you go too). Then tell or show the child how to get the coat.

Tips

- Give short, singular directions.

- Keep your speech simple and clear.

- Be aware that most children with autism take things VERY literally.

- Be sure to give plenty of warning before transitioning to another task.

BEHAVIOR

Most children with autism exhibit unusual behavior (shouting, laughing/crying for no apparent reason obsessive attachment to objects, tantrums), but this doesn't mean that they are intentionally behaving badly. As a caregiver, it is important for you to understand that a child with autism may act diffrently or "badly" so you know how to address it.

Tips

- Find a positive outlet for the behavior. For example, shouting indoors is often frowned upon, but going to a park to do so may be more acceptable.

- If a child cannot read, "write" out the rules in pictures instead.

- Don't make the child look at you when you are angry.

- Say "no" firmly, but NOT loudly.

- Give attention and praise to appropriate behavior.

- Talk with parents to find out what discipline tactics they prefer and when to use them (and when not to).

SAFETY

Children with autism are generally unaware or not understanding of dangers around them, so it is your reponsibility to take all the necessary extra steps to protect them from even the most "common sense" dangers. This can include water depth, water temparature, water current, steep slopes, slippery slopes and confined spaces (culverts and drains).

Also note that children with autism are also runners, meaning that they will repeatedly attempt to leave whatever area they are in.

Tips

- Double check all locks and fences to make sure that latch and are secure.

- Introduce yourself to neighbors so they know who to contact if they see the child wander.

- Ask the parents for a current photo and physical description of the child in case of emergencies.

- Take extra precaution when the child is around water (baths, pools, streams, etc.).

This game is really fun. Just because the weather is not warm and the outdoor summer fun has passed does not mean that outside exercise has to halt too. Depending on the season, you can have snowball wars or leaf fights to get the kids moving. Every good fight should have clearly defined sides and involve forts of some kind (try to steer forts towards carboard, paper, cloth or snow instead of something hard.) Just make sure fights do not involve anything too hard, like ice, apples or rocks. A fun variation is to take two objects object (anything, really, from a thick glove to an action figure) and put each one somewhere near the two forts. Team A's object is to capture Team B's object, so this will require teamwork and strategy as well.

5. Clean-Up Races

This is a favorite when you are racing to clean up before the parents get home. Pick a room or task and have the kids race each other to complete it, or set them on separate but relatively equal tasks. If you are sitting for especially competitive kids and you do not want any fights to break out, you can have the kids try to beat their own times rather thean beating each other (start with the messiest room first so it will be easier for the child to beat his time). Stand in central place with a timer and recite loud, cheerful and funny commentary on the time and who is winning. Place a great prize at the end, like a new coloring book or an extra hour before going to bed - but, no matter who "wins," make sure all the kids receive the prize. 6. Sock Skating

Tried and true, Hide and Seek is a favorite for kids of all ages. Best played outside, try to get a large, open area so kids can really chase each other around to figute out who is "it" next. You may need to help the younger ones (or pair them together as a team), but it is almost guarantees a great time and fits giggles as the seeker gets closer and closer to his hiding opponents.

8. Lightning Bug Races

For those humid summer evenings, let kids race lighting bugs and try to predict where they will appear next. Those little things may not be fast, but they sure are sneaky. 9. Relay Races

Get the kiddiest outside and set up a series of obstacles or tasks that the kids must complete with an object in hand (see, it is not just video games that require hand-eye coordination). At the end of their completed run, have them pass the object onto another teammate, who will have to run the same race.
